Neuartige Basaltfaser als Werkstoff – „Rolling Chassis“ als Plattform
Das „Light Car - Open Source“ von EDAG setzt auch bei der Materialwahl auf innovative Lösungen. Neben den Glasflächen oder alternativ der Zukunftswerkstoff Makrolon ist die Fahrzeugstruktur zum überwiegenden Teil aus einer neuartigen, industriell standardisierten Basaltfaser (ASA.TEC Faser) gefertigt. Der 100% recyclingfähige und nahezu unbegrenzt verfügbare Rohstoff ist nicht nur kostengünstiger als Aluminium oder Karbon, sondern weist auch die nahezu gleichen Festigkeitseigenschaften wie konventionelle Werkstoffe auf.

So wird diese neue Qualität der Basaltfaser zukünftig beim Bau für Rotoren bei großen Windkraftanlagen verwendet werden und kann nun ihren konsequenten Einsatz auch in der Automobilindustrie finden. Diese Basaltfaser verfügt damit über das Potential auch als tragendes Strukturelement und damit als zukünftiger Leichtbau-Werkstoff des Automobils im Volumenmarkt eingesetzt zu werden.


Die Vorteile der Basaltfaser:

  • Materialeigenschaften entsprechen den Werten konventioneller Werkstoffe. Als Beleg für die Festigkeitseigenschaften steht die Tatsache, dass die Basaltfaser zukünftig beim Bau von Rotoren von Windkraftanlagen eingesetzt werden wird.
  • Basaltfaser liegt von seinen Materialeigenschaften zwischen dem Qualitätsniveau von Glasfaser und Karbon.
  • Der Preis von Basaltfaser liegt jedoch deutlich unter dem Preis von Karbon. Damit ist die Basaltfaser ein interessanter Ansatz, um Leichtbau auch in Richtung des Volumenmarktes zu entwickeln.
  • Der konsequente Einsatz von Basaltfaser könnte eine Gewichtsreduktion um bis zu 20 Prozent ermöglichen (im Vergleich zu Glasfaser).


    • Das Karosserie-Konzept des „Light Car - Open Sources“ basiert auf einem „Rolling Chassis“ - einer echten, universellen Plattform, auf der modular unterschiedliche Karosserien aufgesetzt werden können. Dies erlaubt eine schnellere und damit kostengünstigere Entwicklung von Fahrzeugderivaten.

    With the choice of materials for EDAG's "Light Car - Open Source", the emphasis is also on innovative solutions. Apart from the glass surfaces or alternatively Makrolon, the material of the future, the structure of the vehicle is predominantly of an innovative, industrially standardised basalt fibre (ASA.TEC fibre). This 100% recyclable and almost infinitely available raw material is not just lighter and less costly than aluminium or carbon, but also has practically the same strength properties as conventional materials. This new quality of basalt fibre, which is to be utilised in the construction of rotors for large-scale wind power plants in the future, can now be put to systematic use in the automotive industry. This type of basalt fibre therefore has the potential for becoming a main structural element and thus being used as a future lightweight material in cars for the high volume market.


    The advantages of basalt fibre:

  • 100 % recyclable
  • Renewable, practically infinitely available material
  • Basalt occurs naturally in various qualities and mineral compositions. Only recently have attempts to produce basalt fibre of a standardised, consistent quality proved successful. (ASA.TEC, Austria)
  • The properties of the material are consistent with those of conventional materials. The fact that basalt fibre is in future to be used in the construction of rotors and wind energy plants is evidence of the material's strength properties.
  • The material properties of basalt fibre mean that its quality is somewhere between that of glass fibre and carbon.
  • However, the price of basalt fibre is well below that of carbon. This makes basalt fibre an interesting means of developing lightweight construction, possibly even for the mass market.
  • The consistent use of basalt fibre could lead to weight reductions (compared to glass fibre) of up to 20 percent.


    • The body concept of the "Light Car - Open Source" is based on a rolling chassis - a genuine, universal platform to which the modules for various bodies can be added. This enables vehicle derivatives to be developed more quickly and at lower cost.
